Euthanasia is more of a western culture idea that deals with the quality of life and whether there is still really life left in the person. It does not attach to murder or killing through hate but through love and empathy. The debate rages on mainly due to the progress of medical technology. We are now able to keep people alive who without the assistance of machines and tubes, these people would have come to the end of their lives.
It also deals with terminally ill people who do not want to continue with life when it will take away their dignity. For many in this condition, it offers them a choice in death when illness has decided to take their lives away.
Part of the positive argument for euthanasia comes from all the less well publicized failed suicides, that leave gravely ill people even worse off.
But the most important issue to raise here is that it should be the choice of the individual themselves. In a healthy and wealthy culture you can choose what you study, what you believe, where to work, how to dress, who are your friends, who you marry, and so much more. Why when facing a terminal illness, shouldnt you be able to choose how you leave this Earth.
