Overview

Foreigners can open a bank account in Botswana, but most retail accounts are designed for people who live there. Banks follow the identification rules in the Banking Act regulations issued under the Bank of Botswana's supervision, and each bank adds its own policy. A Botswana bank account opening is an application, not a purchase: the bank runs its own anti-money-laundering checks and can decline without giving every reason. We prepare the pack the bank asks for and stay on the application until the bank opens the account or declines it.

What the regulations require

The banking regulations require banks to verify a customer's identity, address, and, for companies, beneficial ownership before opening an account. Foreign nationals identify themselves with a valid passport. For customers who live outside Botswana, a bank may also seek references from the customer's foreign bank.

Documents banks commonly ask for

Bank checklists, such as BBS Bank's requirements and Stanbic Bank Botswana's current-account page, typically ask foreigners for:

  • A valid passport
  • A valid residence permit and work permit, or a letter of exemption from the immigration authorities
  • Proof of residential address
  • Proof of income, such as recent pay slips or an employment letter

People who live in Botswana and hold permits have the widest choice. People who live abroad should expect a smaller choice of products, a request for a foreign bank reference, and more questions about the purpose of the account and the source of funds.

Currencies

Accounts are normally held in Botswana pula (BWP). Some banks also offer foreign-currency accounts under their own conditions. We check which accounts the chosen bank offers to your profile.

Do you need to visit the bank?

Usually, yes. Banks generally identify new clients in person at a branch with the original passport and permits. We confirm the bank's process before you travel.

Company accounts

A company account needs the certificate of incorporation and company extract from the Companies and Intellectual Property Authority, the constitution, a board resolution, and identification and proof of address for directors, signatories, and beneficial owners. See our company incorporation service in Botswana.

Why applications get delayed or refused

  • Missing local documents the bank needs, such as a tax number or proof of local presence
  • Proof of address or income the bank does not accept
  • A source of funds that is not documented
  • A purpose for the account that is vague
  • Foreign documents that are not certified, apostilled, or translated

Most of these are fixed before submission. That is the main reason to prepare the pack before the bank sees it.

Related to your application

A local account is often opened alongside other paperwork. If you hold or are applying for Botswana citizenship by investment, the bank can ask for your certificate of registration or passport as part of its checks. You can browse every Botswana service, including company incorporation, passport renewal, and the police clearance certificate.

What's included

  • A check of which bank in Botswana will consider your nationality, residence, and planned use of the account
  • A document checklist built from that bank's current rules for non-residents

  • Help arranging notarised or certified copies, apostilles, and translations when the bank asks for them

Documents

What to send

Passport

A valid passport for each account holder.

ID card

A valid residence and work permit, or an immigration exemption letter, if you live in Botswana.

Proof of address

Proof of your residential address.

Proof of funds

Recent pay slips, an employment letter, or business financials.

Bank reference letter

A letter from your foreign bank, if you live abroad and the bank asks for one.

Process

  1. Brief. Tell us who the account is for (you, your family, or your company), where you live, the currencies you need, and what the account will be used for.
  2. Bank match. We identify a bank in Botswana that accepts your profile and confirm its document list, whether it needs a visit, and its opening deposit and fees. You then receive our quote.
  3. Document pack. You send scans; we check them, arrange notarised copies, references, or translations if needed, and fill in the bank's forms with you.
  4. Submission. The signed forms and certified documents go to the bank, by courier where originals are required.
  5. Compliance review. The bank runs its due-diligence checks and may ask follow-up questions about your income, assets, or planned transactions. We help you answer them.
  6. Account opened. The bank confirms the account number and you fund the opening deposit. Cards and online-banking access follow on the bank's own timeline.
  7. After opening. Keep your details up to date: banks ask account holders to refresh identification and address documents from time to time.

Fees

Price on request

You receive a quote before any filing starts. It separates the CitizenX fee from the bank's opening deposit and charges, notarisation, apostille, translation, and courier costs. Those extras are added only when they apply, and only after you approve them.

Minimum opening deposits and monthly fees are set by each bank and differ by account type, so we confirm them with the chosen bank before you apply.

Government and third-party charges are confirmed in the quote when they apply.

Questions

Yes. Foreigners identify themselves with a passport, and banks usually also ask for a residence and work permit, proof of address, and proof of income. People who live abroad have fewer options and may be asked for a foreign bank reference.

For most retail accounts, banks ask foreigners for a residence and work permit or an exemption letter. We check whether a bank will consider your profile without one.

Accounts are normally in pula. Some banks offer foreign-currency accounts under their own conditions.

No. The bank makes the decision under its anti-money-laundering rules and can decline without giving every reason. We prepare the file it asks for and tell you quickly if it wants more.

Usually yes, with a larger file: certified incorporation documents, the registers of shareholders and directors, a certificate of good standing for older companies, a board resolution, and identification and references for every director, signatory, and beneficial owner. If the company does not exist yet, see our company incorporation service in Botswana.

You approve the quote before the application goes to the bank.
