St. Kitts & Nevis
Overview
Foreigners can open a bank account in Saint Kitts and Nevis without living in the Federation. Local commercial banks, credit unions, and banks that serve only international clients all take non-resident applications, but each one sets its own acceptance rules. A St Kitts bank account opening is an application, not a purchase: the bank runs its own anti-money-laundering checks and can decline without giving every reason. We prepare the pack the bank asks for, including references and source-of-funds papers, and stay on the application until the bank opens the account or declines it.
What the law requires, and what the bank adds
Customer due diligence in St Kitts and Nevis comes from the anti-money-laundering regulations made under the Proceeds of Crime Act. They require the bank to identify you, and anyone you act for, before the relationship starts, and to understand the purpose of the account. They do not list documents. The checklist you receive is the bank's own policy, which is why two banks can ask for different papers.
Documents banks commonly ask for
A guide for foreign investors by a Basseterre law firm lists what local institutions typically request from a foreigner:
- Two valid photo IDs, such as a passport plus a driver's licence or national ID card
- A character reference from a professional, such as a lawyer, doctor, or accountant
- A reference letter from your current bank
- Evidence of your ties to the Federation where relevant, such as property, an approved project, or a residence or work permit
- An explanation of the source of funds and the expected activity on the account
- Information for FATCA compliance
Banks also ask for a recent proof of address, usually a utility bill or bank statement no more than three months old. Copies that the bank's staff have not seen in original form generally need to be notarised, and some banks want apostilled copies sent by courier.
Personal, company, and international accounts
- Personal account: savings or chequing accounts, usually in Eastern Caribbean dollars (XCD) and often in US dollars. The Eastern Caribbean dollar is pegged to the US dollar.
- Company account: needs the company's incorporation documents, the details of shareholders and directors, and identification for every director, signatory, and beneficial owner.
- International (non-resident) banks: some banks licensed in the Federation only serve clients who live abroad. One example, International Merchant Bank, states that its accounts are for non-residents only, does not accept cash or cheque deposits, and applies its own client-acceptance and country-risk policies.
Do you need to travel?
Not always. Some banks ask you to open in person at a branch on St Kitts or Nevis, while others accept a remote application with certified documents and a video call to check the originals. Commercial banks in the Federation are supervised by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. We confirm the exact arrangement with the bank before you book travel.
Why applications get delayed or refused
- Source of funds that is not documented, or expected deposits that do not match the paperwork
- References that are missing, out of date, or not on letterhead
- Copies that are not notarised, or certified in the wrong order with translations
- A purpose for the account that is vague
- Missing answers on the tax-residence (FATCA/CRS) forms
Most of these are fixed before submission. That is the main reason to prepare the pack before the bank sees it.

If you hold or are applying for Saint Kitts and Nevis citizenship by investment, the bank can ask for your certificate of registration or passport as part of its checks. Our guide on using a St Kitts and Nevis passport to open an offshore bank account explains how the passport is used in KYC. Process
- Brief. Tell us who the account is for (you, your family, or your company), where you live, the currencies you need, and what the account will be used for.
- Bank match. We identify a bank in Saint Kitts and Nevis that accepts your profile and confirm its document list, whether it needs a visit, and its opening deposit and fees. You then receive our quote.
- Document pack. You send scans; we check them, arrange notarised copies, references, or translations if needed, and fill in the bank's forms with you.
- Submission. The signed forms and certified documents go to the bank, by courier where originals are required.
- Compliance review. The bank runs its due-diligence checks and may ask follow-up questions about your income, assets, or planned transactions. We help you answer them.
- Account opened. The bank confirms the account number and you fund the opening deposit. Cards and online-banking access follow on the bank's own timeline.
- After opening. Keep your details up to date: banks ask account holders to refresh identification and address documents from time to time.
Fees
Price on request
You receive a quote before any filing starts. It separates the CitizenX fee from the bank's opening deposit and charges, notarisation, apostille, translation, and courier costs. Those extras are added only when they apply, and only after you approve them.
Minimum opening deposits and monthly fees are set by each bank and differ by account type, so we confirm them with the chosen bank before you apply.
Government and third-party charges are confirmed in the quote when they apply.

Usually yes, with a larger file: certified incorporation documents, the registers of shareholders and directors, a certificate of good standing for older companies, a board resolution, and identification and references for every director, signatory, and beneficial owner. You approve the quote before the application goes to the bank.
