Overview

A São Tomé and Príncipe passport renewal is for someone who already holds that passport and needs a new one. An expired passport can usually still be renewed. If the passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, the request is a replacement, which often has its own steps.

We check your file against the official requirements, prepare the forms and the photo, and follow the application through with the issuing authority or the consulate. If the authority wants you in person for biometrics or collection, we tell you before you book travel.

How renewal works in São Tomé and Príncipe

These points come from São Tomé and Príncipe's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement:

  • Passports are issued by the Serviço de Migração e Fronteiras (SMF).
  • Since March 2026, under Decree-Law 1/2026, citizens in the diaspora can apply without attending in person.
  • You send, as PDFs by email to the SMF, the signed application form, a copy of your valid identity card (Bilhete de Identidade), a passport photo on a white background, and a letter to the SMF Director.
  • The letter names a representative in São Tomé and Príncipe who pays the fee and collects the passport.
  • For a lost passport, a police declaration is also required.

Requirements and fees change, so we check the official source again before your file goes in.

Renewal or replacement?

  • Renewal. Your passport is valid, about to expire, or expired, and you still have it.
  • Replacement. The passport was lost, stolen, or damaged. Expect a police report or a sworn declaration, and sometimes a longer wait.
  • Change of details. If your name or other details changed, the authority usually wants the supporting civil documents first.

Why applications get delayed

  • A photo that does not meet the size, background, or expression rules
  • Missing or uncertified supporting documents
  • Details that do not match across your passport, ID, and civil records
  • Applying through the wrong office or mission for where you live
  • A lost passport reported as renewed instead of replaced

We check each of these before the application goes in.

Fees

Price on request

You receive a quote before any filing starts. It separates the CitizenX fee from government charges, courier costs, and legalisation. Those extras are added only when they apply, and only after you approve them.

Government fees change, so we confirm them with the issuing authority or consulate for your case before you sign.

Government and third-party charges are confirmed in the quote when they apply.

Yes. Since March 2026 the SMF accepts applications by email from citizens in the diaspora, with a local representative who pays and collects.
