Overview

The Malta eID card is the main identity document for citizens at home. It is often needed to open accounts, sign contracts, vote, or renew other documents. We prepare the application, book the appointment, and follow the card until it is ready.

How it works in Malta

These points come from Identità's eID card FAQ and the Identity Cards Unit FAQ:

  • Every Maltese citizen over 14 must hold a valid identity card. Citizens who return to live in Malta apply within a month of returning.
  • Renewals use Form ID 10A and your current card. First applications use Form ID 10, signed by a recommender who has known you for at least two years.
  • You can renew at the Identity Cards Unit in Blata l-Bajda or Rabat (Gozo), and local councils also take renewals. You can book online, and walk-ins are accepted.
  • Applicants living abroad must still come in person, because new biometrics are taken for every card.
  • Most cards are valid for 10 years. Cards issued at 14 and 16 expire one month after the holder's 16th and 18th birthdays.

Rules and fees change, so we check the official source again before your application goes in.

Before you apply

  • Plan for an in-person step. Most authorities take fingerprints, a photo, or a signature themselves.
  • Check your names. The spelling should match your passport, birth record, and any naturalisation certificate.
  • Have your citizenship evidence ready. New citizens may need the certificate or registration record before the card can be issued.

Why applications get delayed

  • Names or dates that differ between documents
  • A birth or citizenship record that is not yet in the civil registry
  • Missing proof of a name change or marriage
  • Photos that do not meet the authority's rules
  • Fees paid to the wrong account or for the wrong year

We check each of these before the application goes in.

  3. Documents. You send scans; we check them and arrange translations or certificates if needed.

Fees

Price on request

You receive a quote before any filing starts. It separates the CitizenX fee from government charges, translations, and courier costs. Those extras are added only when they apply, and only after you approve them.

Government fees change, so we confirm them with the issuing authority for your case before you sign.

Government and third-party charges are confirmed in the quote when they apply.

Questions

Usually yes, because the authority takes biometrics itself. We tell you before anything is filed if a visit is needed.

No. Identità says you always need to visit in person, because new biometrics are taken for each card. We prepare the form and the appointment so you only make one visit.

From the official sources linked on this page. We check them again before filing because rules and fees change.

You approve the quote before we file. Government fees, translations, and courier charges are listed on their own when they apply.
