Overview

Foreigners can open a bank account in Jordan, including people who live abroad. Jordanian banks are supervised by the Central Bank of Jordan and apply its customer due-diligence rules, but each bank sets its own document list. A Jordan bank account opening is an application, not a purchase: the bank runs its own anti-money-laundering checks and can decline without giving every reason. We prepare the pack the bank asks for and stay on the application until the bank opens the account or declines it.

Residents and non-residents

Banks treat foreigners who live in Jordan differently from those who live abroad. Residents usually show a valid passport, a Jordanian residence or work permit, a Jordanian address, and proof of employment, as on the Bank of Jordan's current-account page. Non-residents do not have those local documents, so banks ask for more evidence from home instead.

Documents banks commonly ask for from non-residents

The Capital Bank KYC document list is a good example. For a non-resident foreigner it asks for:

  • A valid passport, including its personal number
  • A second photo ID, such as a national ID card or driver's licence from your home country
  • Proof of your address abroad
  • Proof of income, such as a salary letter, pay slips, or business financials

Banks also ask about the purpose of the account and the source of the funds you will deposit, and US persons complete FATCA forms. Documents not in Arabic or English may need a certified translation, and foreign official documents may need legalisation or an apostille.

Currencies

The Jordanian dinar (JOD) is pegged to the US dollar, and most banks open accounts in dinars and in US dollars, often also in euros. Jordanian banks include local banks and branches of regional and Islamic banks, so you can choose a conventional or a sharia-compliant account.

Do you need to visit the bank?

Usually, yes. Banks generally identify new clients in person at a branch with the original passport. We confirm with the bank before you travel whether any part can be done in advance, such as a document pre-check.

Accounts for investors

If you are applying for Jordan citizenship by investment, some investment options involve funds held with a Jordanian bank, so the bank is chosen with the programme's requirements in mind. We coordinate the account with the rest of your application.

Company accounts

A company account needs the company's registration certificate from the Companies Control Department, its articles, the authorised signatories, and identification for the shareholders, directors, and beneficial owners. See our company incorporation service in Jordan.

Why applications get delayed or refused

  • No second photo ID or proof of address abroad
  • Proof of income that does not support the planned deposits
  • A purpose for the account that is vague
  • Untranslated or unlegalised foreign documents
  • Missing FATCA or tax-residence answers

You can browse every Jordan service, including passport renewal, the national ID card, and the police clearance certificate.

What's included

  • A check of which bank in Jordan will consider your nationality, residence, and planned use of the account

  • Help arranging notarised or certified copies, apostilles, and translations when the bank asks for them

Process

  1. Brief. Tell us who the account is for (you, your family, or your company), where you live, the currencies you need, and what the account will be used for.
  2. Bank match. We identify a bank in Jordan that accepts your profile and confirm its document list, whether it needs a visit, and its opening deposit and fees. You then receive our quote.
  3. Document pack. You send scans; we check them, arrange notarised copies, references, or translations if needed, and fill in the bank's forms with you.
  4. Submission. The signed forms and certified documents go to the bank, by courier where originals are required.
  5. Compliance review. The bank runs its due-diligence checks and may ask follow-up questions about your income, assets, or planned transactions. We help you answer them.
  6. Account opened. The bank confirms the account number and you fund the opening deposit. Cards and online-banking access follow on the bank's own timeline.
  7. After opening. Keep your details up to date: banks ask account holders to refresh identification and address documents from time to time.

Fees

Price on request

You receive a quote before any filing starts. It separates the CitizenX fee from the bank's opening deposit and charges, notarisation, apostille, translation, and courier costs. Those extras are added only when they apply, and only after you approve them.

Minimum opening deposits and monthly fees are set by each bank and differ by account type, so we confirm them with the chosen bank before you apply.

Government and third-party charges are confirmed in the quote when they apply.
