Nauru
Overview
Banking in Nauru is very different from larger countries. Since August 2025, local banking services have been provided by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank), the only bank on the island, after Bendigo Bank's agency on the island closed, as reported by the Pacific Islands News Association. A Nauru bank account opening is therefore a question of eligibility first: we check whether the bank will consider your profile, prepare what it asks for, and stay on the application until the bank opens the account or declines it.
Who can open an account
According to CommBank's Nauru page, you become a customer by visiting one of its two agencies, in Aiwo District and Ewa District. It offers an everyday account, an online saver, and business accounts, but not its full range of Australian products. Because the account is opened in person on the island, it is realistic mainly for people who live in or travel to Nauru.
Documents the bank asks for
- One primary photo ID, such as a Nauru passport, an international passport or travel document, or a driver's licence issued in Nauru, Australia, or New Zealand
- For under-18s, a birth certificate
- For business owners and signatories, a paper business application form completed at the agency
- Expect questions on your occupation and the source of the funds you will deposit
If you are a new citizen living abroad
If you hold or are applying for Nauru citizenship, you may not need a bank account on the island at all. Most new citizens bank where they live, or open an account in a third country, and use the Nauru passport as one of their identity documents. We can help you prepare a bank application elsewhere, including the source-of-funds pack, and explain how the bank is likely to treat a Nauru passport in its checks.
Do you need to visit?
For an account on the island, yes: CommBank opens accounts at its agencies in Nauru. We confirm the process before you travel, because flights to Nauru are limited.
Company accounts
Company accounts are only realistic for businesses that operate in Nauru. The bank asks for the company's registration documents, the authorised signatories, and identification for directors and beneficial owners. See our company incorporation service in Nauru.
Why applications get delayed or refused
- Missing local documents the bank needs, such as a tax number or proof of local presence
- Proof of address or income the bank does not accept
- A source of funds that is not documented
- A purpose for the account that is vague
- Foreign documents that are not certified, apostilled, or translated
Most of these are fixed before submission. That is the main reason to prepare the pack before the bank sees it.
You can browse every Nauru service, including passport renewal, the national ID card, and the police clearance certificate.
What's included
- A check of which bank in Nauru will consider your nationality, residence, and planned use of the account
- A document checklist built from that bank's current rules for non-residents
- Review of your passport, second ID, proof of address, references, and source-of-funds papers before anything is sent
- Help arranging notarised or certified copies, apostilles, and translations when the bank asks for them
- Preparation of the bank's application, signature, and tax-residence (FATCA/CRS) forms
- Submission and follow-up with the bank, including answers to its compliance questions
- A clear note in advance if the bank wants a branch visit, a video call, or more documents
- For companies: preparation of the corporate pack (incorporation documents, registers, good standing, ownership chart, board resolution)
Documents
What to send
Passport
A valid passport or other accepted photo ID.
Proof of address
Proof of your address, if the bank asks for it.
Proof of funds
Information on your occupation and income.
Source of funds
Where the money comes from, with the papers behind it.
Process
- Brief. Tell us who the account is for (you, your family, or your company), where you live, the currencies you need, and what the account will be used for.
- Bank match. We identify a bank in Nauru that accepts your profile and confirm its document list, whether it needs a visit, and its opening deposit and fees. You then receive our quote.
- Document pack. You send scans; we check them, arrange notarised copies, references, or translations if needed, and fill in the bank's forms with you.
- Submission. The signed forms and certified documents go to the bank, by courier where originals are required.
- Compliance review. The bank runs its due-diligence checks and may ask follow-up questions about your income, assets, or planned transactions. We help you answer them.
- Account opened. The bank confirms the account number and you fund the opening deposit. Cards and online-banking access follow on the bank's own timeline.
- After opening. Keep your details up to date: banks ask account holders to refresh identification and address documents from time to time.
Fees
Price on request
You receive a quote before any filing starts. It separates the CitizenX fee from the bank's opening deposit and charges, notarisation, apostille, translation, and courier costs. Those extras are added only when they apply, and only after you approve them.
Minimum opening deposits and monthly fees are set by each bank and differ by account type, so we confirm them with the chosen bank before you apply.
Government and third-party charges are confirmed in the quote when they apply.
Questions
Since August 2025, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia provides banking services in Nauru, after Bendigo Bank's agency closed.
Only by visiting one of CommBank's two agencies on the island, with an accepted photo ID such as an international passport. There is no way to open the account remotely, so it rarely suits people who live abroad.
Most new citizens bank where they live or in a third country and use the Nauru passport as an identity document. We can help prepare that application.
No. The bank makes the decision under its anti-money-laundering rules and can decline without giving every reason. We prepare the file it asks for and tell you quickly if it wants more.
Usually yes, with a larger file: certified incorporation documents, the registers of shareholders and directors, a certificate of good standing for older companies, a board resolution, and identification and references for every director, signatory, and beneficial owner. If the company does not exist yet, see our company incorporation service in Nauru.
You approve the quote before the application goes to the bank.
