Overview

Foreigners can open a bank account in Sierra Leone, but the process is built around people who live there. Banks are supervised by the Bank of Sierra Leone and follow its know-your-customer rules. A Sierra Leone bank account opening is an application, not a purchase: the bank runs its own anti-money-laundering checks and can decline without giving every reason. We prepare the pack the bank asks for and stay on the application until the bank opens the account or declines it.

Documents banks commonly ask for

Banks such as Rokel Commercial Bank typically ask for:

  • A completed account-opening form
  • A valid passport or other accepted photo ID
  • Proof of address in Sierra Leone
  • Two recent passport photos
  • An initial deposit

Banks can ask for more documents to complete their checks, such as proof of income, an employment letter, a residence permit, or a reference from your existing bank.

The national identification number

Banks in Sierra Leone have moved to require a national identification number (NIN) for individual accounts, as reported by Sierra Leone Monitor. Citizens and residents receive it through the national civil registration system. Foreigners without a NIN generally identify themselves with a passport, but some banks also ask for a residence permit. If you are a new citizen, getting your national ID first makes the bank application simpler; see our national ID card service.

Living abroad

If you live outside Sierra Leone, the main obstacle is proof of a local address and, at some banks, a branch visit. We check which banks will consider an overseas applicant and what they need before you travel.

Currencies

Accounts are normally held in leones (SLE), and banks also offer US-dollar accounts, which are commonly used for international payments.

Company accounts

A company account needs the certificate of incorporation from the Corporate Affairs Commission, the memorandum and articles, a board resolution, the tax identification number, and identification and photos for directors, signatories, and beneficial owners. See our company incorporation service in Sierra Leone.

Why applications get delayed or refused

  • Missing local documents the bank needs, such as a tax number or proof of local presence
  • Proof of address or income the bank does not accept
  • A source of funds that is not documented
  • A purpose for the account that is vague
  • Foreign documents that are not certified, apostilled, or translated

Most of these are fixed before submission. That is the main reason to prepare the pack before the bank sees it.

Related to your application

A local account is often opened alongside other paperwork. If you hold or are applying for Sierra Leone citizenship by investment, the bank can ask for your certificate of registration or passport as part of its checks. You can browse every Sierra Leone service, including company incorporation, passport renewal, and the police clearance certificate.

Process

  1. Brief. Tell us who the account is for (you, your family, or your company), where you live, the currencies you need, and what the account will be used for.
  2. Bank match. We identify a bank in Sierra Leone that accepts your profile and confirm its document list, whether it needs a visit, and its opening deposit and fees. You then receive our quote.
  3. Document pack. You send scans; we check them, arrange notarised copies, references, or translations if needed, and fill in the bank's forms with you.
  4. Submission. The signed forms and certified documents go to the bank, by courier where originals are required.
  5. Compliance review. The bank runs its due-diligence checks and may ask follow-up questions about your income, assets, or planned transactions. We help you answer them.
  6. Account opened. The bank confirms the account number and you fund the opening deposit. Cards and online-banking access follow on the bank's own timeline.
  7. After opening. Keep your details up to date: banks ask account holders to refresh identification and address documents from time to time.

Fees

Price on request

You receive a quote before any filing starts. It separates the CitizenX fee from the bank's opening deposit and charges, notarisation, apostille, translation, and courier costs. Those extras are added only when they apply, and only after you approve them.

Minimum opening deposits and monthly fees are set by each bank and differ by account type, so we confirm them with the chosen bank before you apply.

Government and third-party charges are confirmed in the quote when they apply.

Questions

Yes. Banks usually ask for a passport, proof of address in Sierra Leone, two passport photos, an initial deposit, and the bank's form. Some also ask for a residence permit.

Banks now require a NIN for individual accounts held by citizens and residents. Foreigners without one generally use a passport, sometimes with a residence permit.

Yes. Banks offer US-dollar accounts next to leone accounts.

No. The bank makes the decision under its anti-money-laundering rules and can decline without giving every reason. We prepare the file it asks for and tell you quickly if it wants more.

Usually yes, with a larger file: certified incorporation documents, the registers of shareholders and directors, a certificate of good standing for older companies, a board resolution, and identification and references for every director, signatory, and beneficial owner. If the company does not exist yet, see our company incorporation service in Sierra Leone.

You approve the quote before the application goes to the bank.
